The current Mario-less state of affairs makes me think that Nintendo is planning a new console to follow the Switch, and that they're holding off on releasing Mario games for it until they know for sure that people will buy it. We don't need a new Mario game to sell Switches—it's already one of the most successful platforms of all time. Now is the perfect opportunity to bring Nintendo's lesser-known brands to the Switch and promote them to a wider audience. After all, releasing a game onto the platform will boost its sales.
